Name meanings, origins, heritage attributions and pronunciations in NameRoots are offered for interest and may be incomplete, simplified or contested. Choosing a child's name is a permanent decision — check anything that matters to you against a source you trust.
1. Agreement
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of NameRoots ("NameRoots", the "Service"), provided by BRK Services PLLC ("we", "us", or "our"), including the NameRoots iOS application and the website at name-roots.com. By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. What NameRoots is
NameRoots helps people explore and shortlist baby names, on their own or together with a partner and up to two other people. It offers a swipeable name deck, heritage and style filters, spoken pronunciations, an AI name advisor, and shared match lists that update in real time between everyone in a session.
NameRoots is a tool for making a decision, not a source of authority about it. Name data, etymologies, heritage associations and popularity information are drawn from public datasets and generated content, and may contain errors or omissions. A name's meaning, cultural significance or appropriateness in a particular community is not something we can guarantee.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use NameRoots. If you are under 18, you may use the Service only with the involvement of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these Terms on your behalf. You must have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms.
4. Your account
You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide, for keeping your sign-in credentials secure, and for activity that takes place under your account. Tell us promptly at support@brk-services.com if you believe your account has been used without your permission.
You may delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete Account. This is permanent and cannot be undone. See our Privacy Policy for what is removed and what is kept.
5. Shared sessions
A session can hold up to four people. Inside one, what you do is not private to you: the names you like, the notes and reactions you add to a match, and your place in the group are visible to the others in your session. Only invite people you are content to share that with.
Some things are shared more narrowly than others. The person who created the session and the first person to join it share a Partner Matches list between the two of them. Everyone in the session shares the Group Matches list. The person who created the session can remove anyone who joined after the first participant.
Sessions outlive the people in them. If you leave a session or delete your account, the session carries on for everyone else and their names, swipes and matches are unaffected. If you created the session, it passes to whoever has been in it longest. A session with nobody left in it is deleted. Names you had matched on remain visible to the people who still like them, but no longer count as liked by you.
Invite codes are single use and expire after 48 hours. Anyone holding an unused code can join your session, so treat a code as you would a password and generate a new one for each person you invite.
6. The partner unlock and payment
NameRoots is free to use on your own. Co-swiping with other people requires a one-time unlock, purchased through the Apple App Store. The price is shown before you buy.
This is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Nothing renews, and you will not be charged again. The unlock is attached to the Apple ID that bought it rather than to your NameRoots account, so it cannot be transferred to another Apple ID, and you can restore it on a new device with Restore Purchase in Settings.
One unlock covers the person who creates a session and the first person to join. Anyone joining as a third or fourth participant buys their own unlock. If you invite someone to a session that already holds two people, they will be asked to pay before they can join — tell them so before you send the code.
Apple's purchase and refund terms apply to everything bought through the App Store, and refund requests are handled by Apple rather than by us. Deleting your NameRoots account does not refund the purchase and does not remove the unlock from your Apple ID; if you sign up again with the same Apple ID, Restore Purchase will bring it back.
7. AI name suggestions
The AI name advisor generates suggestions from what you tell it — your surname, your other children's names, the heritages and style you have chosen, and the names you have already liked. Its replies are generated text. They may be wrong, may repeat names you have rejected, may describe a name's origin or meaning inaccurately, and may suggest a name that is unsuitable for reasons the model cannot know.
Treat its output as a starting point rather than a recommendation, and verify anything that will inform your decision. What you type into the advisor is sent to our AI provider to generate a reply; see the Privacy Policy for what that involves.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use NameRoots for any unlawful purpose, or in breach of these Terms.
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other users' accounts or sessions, or our systems.
- Join, or attempt to join, a session you have not been invited to.
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service, or circumvent rate limits or other technical restrictions.
- Copy, scrape, resell or redistribute NameRoots' name data or content except as these Terms allow.
- Use the AI advisor to generate unlawful, harassing or abusive content.
- Record audio of anyone who has not agreed to it, or upload anything you do not have the right to provide.
9. Your content
The names you like, the notes you write, the sibling names you add and the pronunciations you record remain yours. You grant us the limited licence needed to store, process and display that content so we can provide the Service — for example, syncing your likes to the other people in your session, keeping your profile available when you sign in on another device, and sending text to our AI and speech providers to generate a reply or an audio clip. We handle this information as described in our Privacy Policy.
Content you contribute to a shared session is visible to the other people in it, and may remain visible to them after you leave, as described in section 5.
10. Our content
NameRoots, including its software, design, curated name data and written content, is owned by BRK Services PLLC or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service for your own personal purposes. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.
11. Availability and changes
We aim to keep NameRoots available but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may change, suspend or discontinue features, and may impose limits on use. Features that depend on third-party services — real-time sync, spoken pronunciation, AI suggestions — may be unavailable when those services are.
12. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service, its name data, its pronunciations, or any AI-generated suggestion will be accurate, complete, current or suitable for your circumstances.
13. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, BRK Services PLLC will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising out of or relating to your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or fifty US dollars.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
14. Termination
You may stop using NameRoots and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including sections 9 through 13 — will survive.
15. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as NameRoots changes. The current version will always be posted here with its effective date. Where a change is material, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.
16. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Davidson County, Tennessee, and you and we consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
